The grungy pop-goth style has just gone up on a whole new level and it gets even better, thanks to American designer Adelina Mictlan, who produces such incredible jewellery.
Mictlan, who has her own boutique Gloom and Doom in the US, makes the dark side become deliciously alive through her whimsical – and sometimes strange – designs. Her 2011 look book consists of gold pyramid and Gloom-Doom double finger rings, as well as an array of interesting chains and neckpieces reminiscent of astronomical figures, such as stars and moons.
Inspired by alternative art, music and fashion, Mictlan makes occult look cool. Her collection of necklaces, chains and rings are true statement pieces, not easily found in the market. The jewellery is inspired by Aztec mythology, heavy metal music and fashion associated with the punk era.
Her signature designs include pieces like the pyramid stud rings inspired by Egyptian pyramids. Not only do the designs catch your attention, her approach to each piece is also interesting. The majority of carvings comes from wax, and the frequent use of dark patina gives each piece a high contrast of light and dark reflections, making it eye-catching and more true to the occult theme. Mictlan also uses techniques like acid etching and hand piercing.
Our favourites include a small hand-etched crescent-shaped sterling silver necklace. The crescent design is cut from an inch thick disk, and the use of dark patina gives it a real moon-like feel. If occult, folklore, and mythological themes have always taken your fancy, Mictlan should be your next stop.
