Jack Johnson stands out at BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park
Jack Johnson is known for his acoustic, folk-rock music and understated, low-key style – in short, it’s impossible not to like him and all that he stands for. He took the stage as part of BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park this weekend, playing to thousands of people as part of quite a mixed bag of music, and putting on a brilliant performance that was appreciated by all.
Originating from Hawaii, Johnson started playing music at the tender age of eight and began writing at 12. Initially he showed promise as a surfer, following in his father’s famous footsteps until a fateful accident ended those plans. He then continued with his music, writing for other artists until 2001 when he released Brushfire Fairytales, with Flake and Inaudible Melodies being some of the best-known tracks. From there he grew from strength to strength and today has six studio albums and a massive following.
He opened his set with the much-loved Better Together, acoustically, and allowed his voice to ring out across all of Hyde Park. Then he brought on the band to accompany him with Taylor and Sitting, Waiting, Wishing. The performance was mellow; Jack set the tone in his flip-flops, but the crowd lapped up everything he gave them. Playing for such a short set meant being picky with his songs and he rather boldly decided to introduce two new ones: Radiate and I Got You, which he closed with. His gamble paid off, as the crowd loved them both.
Johnson is one of those rare acts whose work is beautifully honest. His lyrics, as well as his music, are so thoughtful that every song hits a note with somebody. To say he is talented would be an understatement, as he seems to do so much more with a simple acoustic guitar, modesty and humility than some artists do with entire orchestras. Jack Johnson was one of the standout acts at Live in Hyde Park and can, no doubt, always expect a warm welcome in London.
