New York City left starry-eyed as nine new restaurants are awarded first star
It’s the equivalent of the Oscars for the culinary world and food enthusiasts all over the globe regard The Michelin Guide as the bible to good eating. Every year New York restaurants are either graced or shamed by the guide and this year was no different as the city saw nine restaurants rise to the ranks of one-star status.
The winners of the day were certainly Asko in Booklyn, Carbone, Caviar Russe and Ichimura, along with other Manhattan natives Telepan, The Musket Room and Le Restaurant, who were all awarded their coveted first star. Aquavit and Lincoln were too, with Mario Batali’s Babbo, also in Manhattan, regaining a star they had lost in 2009. One large celebration to be expected is that of the Korean eatery Jungsik in Tribeca, run by Jungsik Kim. The restaurant, whose sister establishment in Seoul has been open since 2009, has taken the adventurous New York food scene by storm and was rewarded by joining four other restaurants on the esteemed two-star podium. There were no new additions to the third-star category but New York stalwarts such as Eric Ripert’s Le Bernardin, Daniel Humm’s Eleven Madison Park and Thomas Keller’s Per Se all retained their stellar standards. They are, of course not alone in that class with Masa, Jean-Georges, Daniel and Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare for company.
Not everyone can be a winner however, with both Gordon Ramsay’s The London and Terrance Brennan’s Picholine losing both of their stars.
The 2014 Guide is testament to the high quality and diverse food that New York produces. The city can expect even greater things from here on out.
