Everybody Wants Some!!CultureCinemaMovie reviews
It took seven years to finally get financing for Everybody Wants Some!!. Richard Linklater is not a man who tends to disappoint and in that time the world of film and comedy has suffered. After the critical acclaim Linklater received from his 2014 release, Boyhood, he is on top form, making audiences everywhere toss their heads back and have a good belly laugh.
Believed to be written as a “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some!! is also viewed by Linklater as a follow-up to Boyhood, as the story starts at the point his previous film left off. The plot follows college freshman Jake as he finds his feet both on the baseball field and living in a house with his new teammates, who are all equally and intensely bonkers. In fact, “bonkers” is a very fitting word to describe just about every element of this movie: the stereotypes, the crazy parties and the ever-shrinking pants. The film revolves around two main storylines – but relies on neither – the first being Jake’s and the second involving a beautiful theatre major. The pace never slows, helped by a timer counting down to when classes begin and a mega soundtrack.
The consistency of Everybody Wants Some!! is what makes it so fabulous, from the sublime casting and meticulous production design to the fact that every piece of action on screen is perfectly timed and placed to assist and support the film. The viewer needn’t worry about getting bored, the background action is planned and performed with the same attention and precision as the main script; choose any shot with a couple of supporting actors strolling in the background, the chances are they are doing something fantastically funny, and it’s this attention to detail that allows a whole audience to be completely won over from start to finish.
There is nothing to hate about this film, apart from how undeniably enjoyable it is. From first glance it could quite justly be assumed that this is a fairly simple, silly comedy, but the fact that it’s drawing audiences varying in age by at least 30 years proves that this is something far more complex and clever. Those who lived through the 80s will appreciate the effort put in to transport viewers straight back to that time; those who did not will surely wish they had. A perfect comedy delivered in the greatest possible way, by grown men in crop-tops and short shorts.
Everybody Wants Some!! Is released nationwide on 13th May 2016.
