Summer weddings: What to wear – men’s edition
For anyone who’s been invited to a wedding during summer time, when it’s likely to be super hot, the discomfort of a three-piece formal suit is probably already looming. Congrats to the friends getting wed, but what’s everyone going to wear with these weather conditions? If it’s hot, the “melting Magnum ice cream” isn’t really the look most wedding guests are going for. Luckily, there are some options here that can help male wedding guests show off their true, handsome style – and all without breaking a sweat.
The linen look
Not the type to experiment? Then, the linen look is the way to go. For some men, wearing linen might signify aged men gallivanting on a beach in Ibiza, but this isn’t the case at all. Linen has become more and more popular over the last couple of years for men of all ages, and a suit in the fabric is the ideal breezy option to wear to a summer wedding. Linen is very breathable and has a very high moisture absorbency rate, which is great for humid climates. Going for a simple two-piece linen suit will help beat the heat without anyone’s style having to suffer.
If a complete suit in linen feels a little bit too static, it might be an idea to go for one piece. This can either be the trousers, shirt or just the jacket. The linen shirt is an excellent all-rounder when it comes to a summer wedding. If a t-shirt and shorts are a little bit too casual, a linen shirt will kick the outfit up a notch. Wherever the wedding is, be it near home, Europe, or further afield, linen clothing for men (vêtements pour hommes in French, kleding voor lange mannen in Dutch) is a great option to stay cool.
Sunny during the day, chilly in the evening
When it’s hot during the day, there’s always a chance it will cool down during the later hours, so it’s a good idea to bring a comfortable sweater to keep warm.
Footwear
With an outfit mind, the next step is the shoe dilemma. Footwear needs to complement an outfit, not degrade or outshine it. When deciding on shoes, it’s important to keep in mind that this is not a job interview, so the comfortable black formal shoes on rack are not the way to go. This is an opportunity to wear something fun – after all, weddings are celebrations. On the other hand, it’s easy to overdo it. If it is ridiculously hot during the day and shorts are a necessity, they should never be worn with overly smart shoes. Never! The perfect shoes to wear to a hot formal event wedding are boat shoes. These will match any outfit. Buying new shoes for a wedding is a great idea, but no one wants to get blisters or sore feet during the special day. So when buying new shoes, it’s best to order a few weeks prior to the wedding so that they can be worn in a little bit and don’t get in the way of great moves on the dancefloor.
Accessories
Accessorising is key to a well put-together outfit. To start off, a belt doesn’t necessarily have to be black or brown – there are always bold options. Then, a watch. They aren’t just useful – they also add subtle style to an outfit, and can say a lot about a person (an Apple watch says the wearer is into tech, a designer watch says “This is a guy who knows his style”). It’s whatever you want to project.
To add a little bit of contrast to a suit jacket, it might be time to bring out the pocket square. The pocket square is available in countless designs and colours, and there’s one to fit style – it’s a small accessory with a big impact.
After a long day of revelry and compliments, even a fashion-forward wedding guest is ready to throw on some comfy mens joggers (sweatpants heren, as the Dutch say), plus a hoodie for a rest on the couch.
