In keeping with the tradition of a bar launch, El Patron’s bar staff are both beautiful and speedy. Most people expect to queue at a bar making cocktails this good, but these expert mixologists keep the crowd moving at an impressive pace.

El Patron offers a mouthwatering range of Mexican-inspired cocktails. The star of the night is the sour and spicy Scorpion: a mix of AcquaRiva Blanco, Stone’s Ginger Wine, chipotle, Falernum liqueur, ginger beer and bitters. Although a wine list is available, this is not a place to drink it; it’s a waste of the wonderful selection of tequilas shining behind the bar.

AcquaRiva, the house tequila, is not any old firewater. The brand is owned by actor Cleo Rocos, best known for her work on The Kenny Everett Television Show. Rocos is not only an ambassador for the new Putney hotspot, she is President of the Tequila Society, so we can be assured of its quality. It’s 100% agave tequila, the only kind recommended by the society; “100% agave tequila leaves you with no hangover if it is consumed properly,” they claim. Take advantage of the impressive selection at this Putney spot.

The tortilla chips with salsa de arbol are fresh, spicy and delicious. The menu is small enough to maintain high standards but large enough that you’ll want to come back to try more. Though the space isn’t huge, El Patron is a great place for groups as well as a fun date night, the bare brickwork and Mexican artwork a gorgeous backdrop. Parties will make the most of the dressing-up boxes of sombreros and moustaches. Silliness is very much encouraged.

The resident band, Truly Medley Deeply, may be recognised from their appearance on Britain’s Got Talent. Their rendition of Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off has drinkers giggling and dancing, even if it doesn’t exactly fit with the Mexican theme.

With exceptional tequila, superb food and its tongue firmly in its cheek, El Patron is sure to be a big hit with the locals. It’s a sparkling Mexican gem in Putney’s crown.
