Number 90 Bar & Kitchen celebrates second birthday in Hackney

The Number 90 Bar & Kitchen in Hackney has something of an abandoned warehouse feel to it, yet the brightly decorated corners try hard to create an eclectic and colourful setting. While the goal of bohemian or hipster chic is not quite accomplished, the atmosphere is nonetheless playful, with a small gallery in one corner and a photo booth in another.

For their two-year anniversary the bar has prepared something truly special for its customers: a four-day celebration with DJs, live music, competitions and much more. On the Thursday, guests were greeted at the door by a woman wrapped as a birthday present who handed out treat bags with hats, confetti and a hangover cure, getting people in the mood for the celebration. A DJ started off the night, which was filled with yet more music and live art.

Generally, Number 90’s bar serves a range of cocktails, inventive both in name and ingredients, such as the East London Espresso Martini or the Fish Island Iced Tea. The Frozen Berry Daiquiri was especially good, as it combined the sweetness of raspberry with zesty lime and hearty Bacardi. While measures were generous, the alcohol thus overshadowing the actual taste experience, the drinks on the whole were definitely not ordinary in any way.

Number 90’s food menu is comprised of a selection of pub classics, such as burgers ranging from beef, chicken, portobello or chorizo, and a selection of new, trendier dishes such as the Vegetable Napoleon or the Super Spring Salad, with kale, avocado, pomegranate and a black quinoa and balsamic dressing. The food itself was unfortunately not too impressive: both the Portobello Mushroom Burger and the Mac and Cheese were a little bland and only the sweet potato fries on the side could fully convince.

Overall, Number 90 Bar and Kitchen is a hip hangout with fun and exceptional drink choices that will liven up any night.
