Ginny & Georgia
Ginny & Georgia revolves around the lives of fifteen-year-old Ginny (Antonia Gentry), a biracial teenager whose pubescent angst is fueled by her rambunctious and vivacious young mother Georgia (Brianne Howey). The latter had her daughter when she was a teenager, making her more like a sister than a parental figure. She also has a dark past that consists of various husbands, constant moving and secrets that she is desperate to keep hidden. Due to this, they never stay in one town for too long. The series starts with the pair and Georgia’s younger son, Austin, as they move to Massachusetts in search of a fresh beginning after the youthful mother’s latest partner is killed in a car crash.
The series encapsulates the female experience in both adolescence and adulthood. Ginny tries to fit in as one of the very few black students and falls for the charm of her new neighbour, Marcus, who is the exact male archetype that her mother has warned her against. Georgia’s daughter is an average teenager, not just because of her angst, but because of the various personas that she rotates, losing sight of who she is in the pursuit of fitting in.
Georgia is trying to offer her children a good life, even if that means lying and scamming to achieve her goals. She knows exactly how to play each of her opponents and when to turn on the charm for those who will help her get what she wants. When the young parent lands a job in the handsome mayor’s office by the second episode, however, it looks like her luck may be running out as the demons of her past begin to catch up with her.
The chemistry between Howey and Gentry is electric, combining the sisterhood and parental features of a mother-daughter relationship with such a small age gap perfectly. Yet, the younger co-star shines through as the breakout performance, grabbing the audience with a firm fist and sweet smile. The actress’s ability to go from Southern belle to femme fatale, constantly proving that no one should underestimate her with charisma and panache, makes it hard to focus on any other character when she is on the screen.
Ginny & Georgia is a wholesome, exciting story of two women against the world, but with all the dark twists and turns that Netflix always serves up on a silver platter.
Ginny & Georgia is released on Netflix on 24th February 2021.
