Uncut Gems (2019)
Known on the internet from the “this is how I win” meme, Uncut Gems is a deep and interesting movie featuring Adam Sandler as the main character with an outstanding performance. The story follows his gaming addiction and self-destructive personality that seems unstoppable, which makes the viewer think about his mania and doomed fate. Oddly enough, watchers will certainly feel a need to re-watch the entire thing again after seeing what happens in the ending.
Casino Royale (2006)
One of the most famous spy films of all time, the 21st Bond movie is based on the very first book written by Ian Fleming about 007 in 1952. This reboot of the series starring Daniel Craig features a less charismatic and inexperienced Bond who travels to Montenegro to play a high stakes game against Le Chiffre, a terrorist financer portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen. The story arc continues in the following movie, Quantum of Solace.
Scorsese’s Casino (1995)
Set in the 70s Las Vegas craze, it features Robert de Niro as Ace, a gangster who manages a mob entertainment complex trying to do things the right way, while falling into attrition with his partner played by Joe Pesci. This amazing Scorsese work follows the same Goodfellas’ theme around understanding how the criminal underworld operates within an American enterprise and how this affects people along the way.
Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
Steven Soderbergh’s remake of the Rat Pack classic features a different approach to the cautious gamer and heist planner. His ensemble lead by George Clooney is sharply dressed and never fussed, sporting a style that many real gamers wish they had. While not focusing on the games, the heist movie presents some interesting views about the Sin City, such as in the famous “the house always wins” scene.
21 (2008)
Based on a true story about a MIT team that was beating the Vegas houses for over a decade, the story follows the strategy about young math geniuses who develop a smart card-counting strategy. The team is lead by Kevin Spacey and Jim Sturgess, who is kidnapped and beaten in an hotel room, which creates a break in the smart plot development.
