In the heart of 1980s New York, a heartwarming tale of companionship and resilience unfolds as Robot Dreams, an Oscar-nominated animated feature, is set to charm audiences across the UK from 22nd March 2024. The film, directed by Pablo Berger and based on Sara Varon’s acclaimed graphic novel, follows the adventures of a lonely dog who constructs a robot friend to share in life’s little moments. The poster and trailer have been released, teasing viewers with the film’s striking use of colour, jazzy soundtrack and endearing canine protagonist.

Robot Dreams has garnered critical acclaim for its poignant narrative and delightful animation, earning it a nomination for Best Animation Feature at the 2024 Academy Awards. This recognition comes on the heels of its success at various international film festivals, including wins for Best Animated Feature at the European Film Awards and the Special Jury Prize at the Animation is Film Festival, as well as the Contrechamp Award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival following its premiere at Cannes.

The film’s plot centres around Dog, a solitary figure in Manhattan who creates a robot companion to share in his daily activities. Their bond is depicted through visually engaging animations and a touching score, encapsulating themes of friendship, technology and the pursuit of happiness. However, a poignant turn of events sees Dog forced to leave Robot at the beach, prompting audiences to question whether a reunion is on the horizon.

The narrative, devoid of dialogue, allows the expressive animation to shine, presenting a love letter to New York City and incorporating numerous nods to film history. Critics have praised the movie for its handcrafted charm and witty depth.

Curzon, the film’s distributor, invites viewers to immerse themselves in this “charming wordless wonder” as Robot Dreams hits UK cinemas this spring, promising an uplifting cinematic experience for families, dog lovers and cinephiles alike.
