Tim Burton reunites with Michael Keaton for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sequel slated for UK release in 2024

Tim Burton, the Oscar-nominated director known for his distinctive visual and narrative style, has reunited with Michael Keaton for the much-anticipated sequel to the award-winning 1988 film Beetlejuice. Titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the film is slated for a UK release on 6th September 2024, Warner Bros Pictures announced today. Alongside Keaton, who reprises his role as the titular character, the film stars Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara and introduces new characters portrayed by Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti in his feature film debut, Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter and Willem Dafoe.

Set in the eerie town of Winter River, the sequel sees three generations of the Deetz family grappling with an unexpected tragedy that brings them back to their haunted home. The plot thickens when Lydia’s teenage daughter, Astrid, played by Ortega, stumbles upon a model of the town in the attic, inadvertently re-opening the portal to the Afterlife. The chaos that ensues threatens both the living and the dead, heralding the return of the mischievous demon Beetlejuice.

The screenplay is penned by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with a story by Gough, Millar and Seth Grahame-Smith, based on the original characters created by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson. The production team includes a mix of Burton regulars and newcomers, with Marc Toberoff, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Tommy Harper and Burton himself producing. The executive production team boasts names such as Brad Pitt and David Katzenberg, among others.

Burton’s unique creative vision is supported by a team of collaborators both new and familiar. Director of Photography Haris Zambarloukos, production designer Mark Scruton, editor Jay Prychidny, costume designer Colleen Atwood, creature effects and special makeup FX creative supervisor Neal Scanlan and composer Danny Elfman, all contribute to the film’s anticipated aesthetic and atmospheric depth.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice promises to be a multi-generational adventure, blending dark humour with Burton’s iconic gothic stylings. The film will premiere in UK cinemas and IMAX, offering fans the first glimpse of Beetlejuice’s return in a modern context. With a star-studded cast and a creative team led by Tim Burton, this sequel aims to capture the imagination of both long-time fans and new audiences alike.
