“I love the contradictions in human beings, and this part offered so many of them”: Daniel Brühl and Arnaud Valois on Becoming Karl Lagerfeld

Becoming Karl Lagerfeld is the new Disney+ series that explores the man behind the iconic persona. Focusing on the enigmatic designer’s early years, set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1970s, this origin story-cum-biographical drama, transports viewers to parties, catwalks and boutiques in Paris, Monaco and Rome. By detailing the ego clashes and fiery passions that shaped his journey, as well as his tenacious ambition and unbridled creativity, and putting front and centre a non-conventional LGBTQ+ love story, the show uncovers the human story behind the myth that led to the legacy, providing a fascinating insight into the power of fashion and the legacy of the visionary designer.

The Upcoming had the chance to speak with Daniel Brühl, the acclaimed actor known for his versatile roles, about taking on Karl Lagerfeld in the series, charting the intense rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent and the poignant love story that shapes Lagerfeld’s early years, offering a fresh perspective on the well-known figure. Brühl explained the thorough preparation required to portray such a multifaceted character, from studying biographies and archival materials to engaging with those who knew Lagerfeld personally, and the challenge of balancing Lagerfeld’s public persona with his private intellectual side, a duality that makes the role compelling. Brühl also praised the exceptional cast and the collaborative process that brought the complex dynamics to life, plus the show’s visual splendour, crediting the costume design for authentically capturing the era’s fashion. He explained how he aimed to present a nuanced portrayal of Lagerfeld, focusing on his formative years and the human stories behind the legendary name.

Arnaud Valois then told us about playing Yves Saint Laurent, the depth of research required to capture his complex persona, working with co-star Daniel Brühl and the meticulous attention to period detail that brings the era to life. Valois further reflected on the enduring legacy of Lagerfeld and the timeless allure of fashion.
