Keira Knightley leads Netflix’s new espionage drama Black Doves, premiere date revealed

Netflix has announced the release of Black Doves, a new series featuring Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire, scheduled to premiere on 5th December. The series, set in London during the Christmas season, combines action and emotional depth in a narrative centred around espionage and personal sacrifice.

Black Doves follows the life of Helen Webb, portrayed by Knightley, a dedicated wife, mother and undercover spy. For a decade, Helen has been covertly sharing her politician husband’s secrets with a clandestine group known as the Black Doves. The plot takes a dramatic turn when Helen’s secret lover, Jason, played by Andrew Koji, is murdered. In response, Helen’s enigmatic boss, Reed, played by Lancashire, enlists her old friend Sam, portrayed by Whishaw, to protect her. Together, they explore a conspiracy that connects London’s dark underbelly with a looming international crisis.

The series is the brainchild of writer and creator Joe Barton, known for his work on Giri/Haji and The Lazarus Project. It is produced by SISTER, in collaboration with Noisy Bear, with executive producers including Jane Featherstone and Chris Fry from SISTER, and Barton himself. The direction is split between Alex Gabassi, known for The Crown, and Lisa Gunning of The Power fame.

Supporting cast members include Andrew Buchan, Omari Douglas, Kathryn Hunter, Sam Troughton, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Paapa Essiedu, Adeel Akhtar, Finn Bennett, Luther Ford, Adam Silver, Ken Nwosu and Tracey Ullman, each bringing depth to the ensemble.

SISTER, the production company behind Black Doves, is an independent global entertainment group that has produced several acclaimed shows such as Chernobyl and This Is Going to Hurt. Founded in 2019, SISTER emphasises supporting visionary creators across various forms of media.
