Post-Civil War thriller 40 Acres to debut on MGM+ this August

MGM+ has announced that the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic thriller 40 Acres will premiere on the streaming platform on 4th August, coinciding with its UK theatrical release. Set in a fractured future where food is the only true currency, the film explores themes of survival, family and generational trauma in a world still reeling from a second American Civil War.

Danielle Deadwyler (Till, Station Eleven) leads the cast as Hailey Freeman, a Black military veteran fiercely guarding her family and their farm in rural Canada. As political collapse and environmental scarcity deepen, Hailey’s past and present collide when her teenage son, Emmanuel, defies her strict code of survival and shelters an injured girl from a neighbouring, seemingly thriving property. What follows is a tense and emotionally charged battle between mother and son as a dangerous militia closes in.

The film also stars Kataem O’Connor, Michael Greyeyes, Milcania Dias-Rojas, Leenah Robinson, Jaeda LeBlanc, Elizabeth Saunders and Haile Amare. Combining grounded character drama with dystopian tension, 40 Acres paints a chilling vision of a future where trust has eroded and self-preservation is paramount.

Directed with intensity and urgency, the film positions itself as more than a survivalist thriller – it’s a provocative examination of race, land ownership and intergenerational legacy. Set against the backdrop of a scorched landscape where history seems doomed to repeat itself, 40 Acres is a timely, harrowing portrait of a family forced to redefine what it means to protect their own.
