Mr Fogg’s Market Tavern to open in Covent Garden
Mr Fogg’s Market Tavern, the latest addition to the Mr Fogg’s collection of London bars, will open in Covent Garden on 20th July, occupying the former site of the Crusting Pipe within the Covent Garden Market building. Operated by Inception Group, the venue will become the largest of the Mr Fogg’s Taverns, which take their theme from Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in Eighty Days.
The new tavern joins the original Mr Fogg’s site on St Martin’s Lane, alongside the Botanical Tavern in Fitzrovia, the City Tavern near Liverpool Street and the Hat Tavern in Soho. The collection comprises ten venues across London, ranging from Liverpool Street to Mayfair.
The Crusting Pipe traded on the site for approximately 45 years before its closure. The new venue will accommodate 130 covers inside and 60 on an outdoor terrace. Designed in the style of a traditional Victorian public house, the interior features multiple rooms connected by vintage brickwork arches and flagstone floors. High seating will occupy the majority of the space, with low booths set within the arches. The covered terrace will include tables and fixed benches in green stripes. Guests can reserve tables, areas and full private hires indoors, while the terrace will operate on a walk-in basis. The Market Building dates back to the 1800s, while Verne’s novel was first published in 1872.
One feature of the site will be The Guinness Saloon, which will have its own bar serving the Irish stout. A counter will record the number of pints of Guinness sold since opening. The customer who orders every 1,000th pint will have their picture added to a wall of fame and will be offered a round, while the person ordering the 10,000th pint will receive a trip to Ireland to visit the Guinness brewery.
Opening daily from 11am, the tavern will serve beers, wines, punches and cocktails, with cocktails presented in distinctive vessels. Beers will include Modelo, Madri and Guinness. Punches will include the Punch & Juicy and A Fruity Punchline. Cocktails will feature the Burlington Martini and the Perfect Timing, among others drawn from across the Mr Fogg’s collection.
The food menu will offer pub classics served in parchment paper, including beer-battered haddock with chips and peas, and a double patty smash burger. A selection of small plates will also be available. A Sunday roast will be introduced in the autumn.
