Elliott Kaye, the co-founder of the north London café Norman’s, will launch his first solo venture, a neighbourhood bar called Marrion’s, on 10th September in Hackney. Open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, with brunch service on Sundays, the new venue offers both a drop-in drinking spot and a place to sit down for a meal. The dimly lit interior has bespoke wooden tables, a counter looking through a hatch into the kitchen and vintage mirrors on the walls, with a number of staff who are long-time colleagues of Kaye’s.

The chef, who worked at Lyle’s, The French House and Leroy, before opening Norman’s in 2020, explained:

“I wanted Marrion’s to be somewhere I’d actually want to go – somewhere you can have a drink, eat something good and feel at home. Nothing too fussy or pretentious. I’ve always loved places like The Odeon in New York: warm, convivial and a bit buzzy. Opening in Hackney felt like a no-brainer. Morning Lane has something special about it, and the energy between Well Street and Hackney Central felt like the perfect fit for what we’re trying to do.”

The food menu follows a similar approach to Norman’s, with options priced between £6 and £16. Listed dishes include Devilled Crab Rarebit, Pork Schnitzel Holstein with Capers, Anchovies and a Fried Egg, a Prawn Cocktail, Moules Frites and a cheeseburger. A small number of sandwiches will also be offered, among them a Tuna Melt. For sides, there’s house coleslaw, fries with malt vinegar mayonnaise and a Waldorf salad.

Cocktails are priced from £12 to £15 and are based largely on classics. A house martini will change each month, beginning with the Puritan, made with Yellow Chartreuse. The bar will also stock a range of Spanish vermouths intended to be served over ice. On the wine list are bottles from growers and importers including Tutto Wines, Otros Vinos, Newcomer and Sager & Wine, with glasses starting at £5 and bottles from £30. One beer – Victoria Málaga – will be available on draught, served in Spanish cañas-style glasses.

The brunch service will run from midday each Sunday and feature varied bites such as Boiled Eggs with Anchovy Soldiers, a Fried Fish Sandwich, a Lox Bagel, Baked Eggs with Vodka Sauce and Melon with Cottage Cheese and Cured Meats, alongside filtered coffee from local roaster Dark Arts.

Marrion’s will operate on a walk-ins-only basis, trading from 6pm until midnight from Thursday to Saturday, with last orders at 11pm, and from midday until 9pm on Sundays.
