LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian

Whether it’s video games, TV shows, or animated shorts, LEGO has a long history of reimagining the Star Wars franchise (alongside various other properties) as zany parodies designed to look like they’re constructed by the iconic plastic bricks. The latest to get the LEGO treatment is The Mandalorian with an animated special directed by Chris Buckley. The plot sees titular bounty hunter Din Djarin (this time voiced by Gavin Hammon) and Grogu arrive at the Mos Eisley Cantina, where they’re greeted by a surprise party thrown by old friends. Here, familiar faces share stories of their past adventures as space pirates plan an attack.

Those who’ve seen a LEGO outing before know exactly what to expect. LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is a light-hearted and irreverently silly retelling of key events from the show. While it sticks to the established blueprints, its non-stop gags and committed performances are bound to appeal to LEGO and Star Wars fans alike.

There’s an impressive amount of detail put into this special. Alongside numerous Easter eggs and references, a lot of attention has been given to the visuals. There’s a stop-motion quality to how everything moves, as if the CGI bricks are being manipulated by hand. Fast and expressive character animations maintain a high level of energy, delivering an assortment of slapstick humour throughout. Having most of the original cast return to reprise their roles, including Amy Sedaris, Katee Sackhoff, Bill Burr and Giancarlo Esposito, is also a striking touch, with each cast member fully embracing the wacky comedy. While Pedro Pascal and Mark Hamill don’t join their co-stars, Hammon and Eric Bauza are worthy substitutes.

There’s not much in the way of plot here. The special’s narrative serves entirely as an excuse to tell LEGO-fied versions of memorable scenes, with the space pirates subplot providing the occasional action break. Not all the self-referential jokes and fourth-wall breaks land. However, the one-liners and visual gags come so fast that viewers don’t need to wait long to have something to chuckle at.

Ultimately, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is another LEGO project, which isn’t a bad thing. While it doesn’t try to rebuild the tried-and-tested formula and not every joke hits the mark, there’s enough charm in this special to assemble a delightful and fun-filled Star Wars parody.
