French patisserie house Ladurée has launched a limited edition collaboration with Sanrio’s My Melody. The rabbit in a pink hoodie will grace a range of macaron gift boxes while stocks last, with availability forecast to continue until the end of September at Ladurée’s boutiques and online.

Two products in the temporary line are available: a box of 12 macarons for £44 sold exclusively in Ladurée boutiques – in person only, and not online – and smaller box of eight, priced at £35 that’s available through the company’s website and at London department store Selfridges.

My Melody was created by Sanrio in 1975 and first appeared in the company’s merchandise lines the same year. The bakery-loving bunny is among the better known figures in the Sanrio catalogue alongside Hello Kitty, and has featured in animated series and a substantial merchandise programme across Asia, Europe and North America. The brand have frequently partnered with food, fashion and beauty brands in recent years, resulting in products ranging from Curious Universe stationery to a Hello Kitty bag collection by Balenciaga.

Ladurée, founded in Paris in 1862, is widely credited with popularising the modern double-decker macaron. The company operates boutiques and tea rooms across several countries and has also previously worked alongside fashion designers, artists and other consumer brands, among them contemporary fashion house Casablanca and London’s V&A museum for a Marie Antoinette exhibition.

Character-led food collaborations have become a common commercial strategy. For Sanrio, tie-ins extend the reach of its characters beyond traditional merchandise, and for Ladurée the idea can attract customers, particularly collectors, who might not otherwise be in the market for luxury confiserie. For fans, it’s a chance to make the macaron experience extra sweet!
