David Corenswet takes on the NFL’s ultimate underdog story in Mr Irrelevant

Superman star David Corenswet is swapping the cape for an American football jersey in Mr Irrelevant, a new film telling the remarkable true story of NFL player John Tuggle.

Every year, the final player chosen in the NFL draft is jokingly crowned “Mr Irrelevant”. In 1983, that player was Tuggle, who was selected by the New York Giants with the very last pick – only to confound expectations once he made it onto the field.

Corenswet plays Tuggle as he attempts to turn what could have been an ignominious end to draft day into the beginning of an NFL career. Michael Shannon stars as legendary Giants coach Bill Parcells, then in his first year as the team’s head coach, while Isabel May plays Tuggle’s new love interest.

The ensemble also includes David Krumholtz, Tuwaine Barrett, Thaddeus LaGrone, Alexander England, Spencer House and Tandi Wright.

The first official trailer has now arrived, introducing Tuggle as the overlooked player suddenly given an opportunity to prove that being picked last does not necessarily mean finishing there.

Mr Irrelevant is directed by Jonathan Levine, whose previous films include 50/50 and Long Shot, from a screenplay by Nick Santora. The film draws on Tuggle’s real-life journey as an NFL outsider and the challenges he faced both on and off the field.
