The Contraception Fair brings comedy, costumes and conversation to the Vagina Museum

A comedy short turning contraceptive choice into a surreal fairground of competing options is coming to the Vagina Museum this October for a special screening and late-night event.

The Contraception Fair follows Camille, a young woman who decides she wants to stop taking the birth control pill, only to find herself transported to an imaginary “Female Contraception Fair” where different methods compete for her attention and pressure her to make a choice.

Produced by BAFTA-nominated Candid Broads Productions, the short stars Ronke Adekoluejo, Kathy Kiera Clarke, Amber Grappy and Annie Haworth, using comedy to explore contraception and some of the expectations and pressures surrounding it.

The film will screen as part of the Vagina Museum’s October Lates programme on 21^st October, alongside a display of costumes and props from the production. Writer-director Julie Magnaudet, costume designer Sarah Yemalla and One Day and The Baby actor Amber Grappy will also take part in a Q&A hosted by Dr Alex Lyons.

Visitors will therefore get more than just the screening, with the evening offering a closer look at how the film’s heightened visual world was created and a chance to hear from the team about why they wanted to approach contraception through comedy.

The short has already picked up the Women’s Voice award at Beeston Film Festival and the Break the Stigma award at Sunrise Film Festival, as well as receiving three nominations at Women X Festival.

With tickets starting at £7.50, the event combines film, design and discussion around a subject that is rarely given such an imaginative treatment on screen.
