Despite the snowy morning, Nicholas K kicked off New York Fashion Week with a packed, high-energy catwalk also thanks to the music by DJ Rob Swift featuring rapper Latasha Alcindor – literally setting the tone for the show.

The brother sister design duo sighted the 90s as the primary inspiration for their designs. While this is a theme that’s been seen frequently on the runway the last few seasons, Nicholas K successfully put their own spin on the nostalgic trope.

Their view of the 90s was one of diversity unifying people through a global humanitarian community the conveyed through their rich layered collection.

The collection opened with warm colors in gold, reds, and rust that carried a cozy vibe across the collection. This feeling was further amplified by the rich textiles, often layered upon each other.

Luxurious leathers, velvets and knits artfully thrown together showed the designer’s signature urban nomad style of cultivated cool.  There was a return of the draping, especially around the waist, that was seen in their spring summer show and still looks fresh for fall.

Styling also was strongly influenced by the 90s. Hair was sleek and straight and makeup was minimal. The standouts were the accessories. The models wore one large hoop earring as a nod to the hip hop style of the time as well as nose rings.

Many models wore leather berets meant to evoke militant political ideas, which the designer might have hoped would encourage activism and a bit of hope in the current political climate.
