Project Runway alumni Michael Costello put on a bold and beautiful SS19 spring runway show, Gitana, inspired by the culture of Roma Gypsies. He envisioned the runway telling the tale of a young woman constrained by tradition looking to find a way to be herself while maintaining her heritage. The result was a high-energy show filled with flowing gowns and bright colours.
Costello showed a bevy of red carpet-ready stunners for women who want to stand out. The necklines were plunging and dresses were slit up to the hip. The designer didn’t stop the dramatic flare there: yards of fabric flowed behind the dresses and billowed out as they walked. Large floor-length sleeves were also used to create volume, which was a nice twist on the cape trend that has been prevalent for the last few seasons.
Even more than the shapes, the colour palette really set the Costello show apart. The runway was bathed in red light that echoed the rich hues of the garments. Large-scale, almost tropical patterns made a huge impact and creating a head-turning look on even the more simple silhouettes.
Michael Costello did what he does best with his latest collection: created exceptional evening gowns for women who, like his fictional heroine, aren’t afraid to be themselves in any situation. Judging by the cheers as the designs came down the catwalk, his customers approved.
