The western genre seems to be enjoying a full-blown resurgence, and Django is the next solid addition to that ongoing trend, loosely following the story of the 1966 spaghetti western of the same name. With impressive production values that centre the action in sweeping landscapes and mud-soaked violence, alongside much playing with genre tropes and gender stereotypes (from Matthias Schoenaerts’s titular cowboy who struggles with his emotions to the always-excellent Noomi Rapace as the villainous Elizabeth defiantly upholding the patriarchy), there’s a lot to sink your teeth into and consider in this cinematically executed ten-part series.

The Upcoming chatted to the stars of the neo-western ahead of it landing on Sky TV. Lisa Vicari and Nicholas Pinnock spoke about their respective characters (Sarah, Django’s estranged daughter, and John Ellis, the founder of the idealistic New Babylon), the appeal of the fresh take on the genre and the idea of an inclusive society that remains elusive today.

Django is released on Sky on 1st March 2023.
