Yuma Hashemi to open Emmanuelle wine bar, a new sister site to Tehran Berlin

This spring, Yuma Hashemi, chef-owner and sommelier of Persian restaurant Tehran Berlin in Clerkenwell – formerly known as The Drunken Butler – is opening a new wine bar, Emmanuelle, just across the road. Hashemi’s second venture, also located on Rosebury Avenue, is a more informal affair that will allow guests to continue their dining experience as well as their wine education.

The launch will allow the founder to delve deeper into his lifelong passion for exploring small-scale winemakers across the world, encouraging conversation amongst guests. Specialist tastings, masterclasses and producer talks will take place throughout the year, whilst the venue will also provide a pre or post-dinner hang out for visitors to its sister site.

Named after Yuma’s beloved Emmanuelle chair, which sits pride of place in Tehran Berlin’s dining room – a throne-like, rattan-style seat coined after its leading appearance in the 1970s erotic film of the same name – the new space will house an almost identical antique, which has been specially sourced for the opening. Other vintage finds will bring a retro feel to the interiors, creating the “living room” to Tehran Berlin’s homely and intimate “dining room”, just a hop across the street, with a sprinkling of Persian influence and items personal to the founder.

The bar’s wine-list will incorporate both new and old world, natural and biodynamic varieties, in addition to an extensive list of champagnes. Mirroring the offering at Tehran Berlin, negronis will play a prominent part on the drinks list, with a selection of vintage serves made with gin, vermouth and Campari sourced from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Food will be served from Emmanuelle’s home-style open kitchen and the menu will change daily to include French-style charcuterie snacks and small plates. Ad-hoc Persian dishes will also be offered such as traditional Iranian bites such as noon-panir-sabzi (bread, cheese and herbs) and aubergine, cucumber and rose with flatbread, as served at Tehran Berlin.
