“I’ve gone from playing ‘Chinese Guy Number One’ to leading roles”: Jason Wong on Dungeons and Dragons – Honour Among Thieves

Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves is a fantasy adventure movie based on the tabletop role-playing game. An all-star cast, featuring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page and Justice Smith, are led by Game Night (2018) directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley on an Ocean’s Eleven-style heist, with the lightness of tone of The Princess Bride, that is firmly set within the fantasy world of elves and dwarves known and loved by players of the original game.

The Upcoming had a wonderful in-depth chat with Jason Wong (Strangers, The Gentlemen, Silent Witness), who stars as one of the story’s villains, undead warrior Dralas, ahead of the film landing in cinemas. He shared the preparation required to speak in the unique language and pull off extensive fight and stunt scenes, what it was like working alongside an epic cast (among them a personal idol of his, Chris Pine), and how the fantasy genre provides an immersive world to escape to. We also discussed his upcoming projects, including reuniting with Guy Ritchie for a very different film, The Covenant, how he’d love to take roles with more vulnerability and try out the romcom genre, plus how representation on-screen is opening up, particularly for East Asian actors, although the UK lags behind the US.
