Sentimental Value — Joachim Trier returns with intimate family drama starring Renate Reinsve, Elle Fanning and Stellan Skarsgård

MUBI has announced that Sentimental Value, the new film from Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World), will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 26th December 2025. The film will receive its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 12th October and has been selected as Norway’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Set against the backdrop of the European film world, the story follows Nora (Renate Reinsve), a successful stage actor who is drawn back into a complicated family dynamic when her estranged father Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård), a once-revered director, attempts a comeback with a film inspired by their own lives. Nora’s sister Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) joins them as tensions simmer and old wounds are reopened. When Gustav offers the film’s lead role to a rising young Hollywood star (Elle Fanning), the family’s fragile reunion is thrown into further disarray.

The film reunites Trier with screenwriter Eskil Vogt and lead actor Reinsve, who previously collaborated on The Worst Person in the World. Sentimental Value premiered in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it took home the Grand Prix.

The ensemble cast also includes Anders Danielsen Lie, with production by Maria Ekerhovd and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar for Mer Film and Eye Eye Pictures. Co-produced across Norway, France, Germany, Denmark and Sweden, the film is backed by BBC Film and several European film institutions.
