Bar Douro London Bridge to bring back Portuguese summer street festival series this June
Bar Douro London Bridge is bringing Festa dos Santos Sundays back to its outdoor terrace near Borough Market. The weekly event will run every Sunday from 7th June till the end of the month, offering Londoners an open-air programme of Portuguese food, drink and live music.
The series draws on the summer street festivals that take place annually across Lisbon and Porto in honour of Santo António, São João and São Pedro. The traditional celebrations date back centuries, with communal dining, music and neighbourhood gatherings honouring the widely observed feast days.
During the festivities in Portugal, streets are lined with charcoal grills, decorations and long shared tables, with residents and visitors eating, drinking and making merry well into the evening to mark the start of summer. Bar Douro wants to recreate the same culture on a smaller scale at its London Bridge venue. The special food and drink menu will include charcoal-grilled sardines, smoky peppers and broa (a rustic Portuguese corn bread) alongside chilled Super Bock beer and Vinho Verde. And for entertainment, live music will be performed by Portuguese singer and guitarist João Menezes, who will play between 2 and 4pm each week.
Bar Douro’s June series is part of a wider trend among London’s Portuguese restaurants and bars to mark the Santos Populares period, which traditionally peaks around the 13th for Santo António in Lisbon and the 24th for São João in Porto. Both are public holidays in their respective cities and are accompanied by parades, fireworks and all-night street parties.
No booking is required for the Festa sessions, though the team has indicated that seating on the terrace will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Outdoor service will run from noon to 8.30pm each Sunday throughout the month.
