BBC’s Murder Trial returns with two new cases and companion podcast

The BBC’s award-winning documentary series Murder Trial will return later this year with two new cases examining high-profile criminal proceedings in Scotland, alongside the launch of a new companion podcast, Inside the Murder Trial.

Produced by Firecrest Films, the latest instalments once again offer behind-the-scenes access to the Scottish justice system, featuring contributions from police investigators, prosecution and defence teams, and the families of those at the centre of the cases.

The first two-part documentary, Death of a Dog Walker (working title), examines the 2024 murder of groundsman Brian Low, who was shot while walking his dog in Highland Perthshire. Initially treated as a non-suspicious death, the case evolved into a murder investigation after shotgun pellets were discovered during the post-mortem examination.

The second film, The Woman on the Bridge (working title), focuses on the death of 28-year-old Kimberly Bruce in Dundee. The programme follows what the BBC describes as the first prosecution of its kind in Scotland, as Bruce’s husband stands trial charged with culpable homicide and domestic abuse in a landmark legal case.

Alongside the television series, BBC Scotland and BBC Sounds have commissioned Inside the Murder Trial, a new ten-part podcast that will further explore the investigations and legal proceedings behind the featured cases.

Since launching in 2023, Murder Trial has become one of the BBC’s most acclaimed factual series, earning multiple awards, including two BAFTAs and a Broadcast Digital Award. Previous instalments have examined a number of complex murder investigations through extensive courtroom access and first-hand testimony.
