Spencer Matthews takes on seven triathlons across seven continents for new Disney+ documentary
Spencer Matthews is preparing to push his endurance to new extremes, attempting seven full-distance triathlons on seven continents in just 21 days for a new feature-length documentary coming to Disney+.
Currently titled Breaking Spencer Matthews, the Hulu Original reunites Matthews with Disney+ three years after Finding Michael, which followed his journey to Mount Everest in search of the body of his older brother Michael. This time, the challenge takes him around the world and culminates in Antarctica, where he will have to enter freezing waters to begin the final triathlon.
Each event covers the full 140-mile distance, but the documentary will look beyond the physical demands of completing seven of them in three weeks. Matthews will reflect on his relationship with alcohol, his public identity following his years in reality television and the continuing impact of his brother’s death on Everest.
Matthews describes the challenge as having evolved from an extreme endurance attempt into “a journey of self-discovery and transformation”, with moments that forced him to confront both his physical and psychological limits.
Joining him on the expedition is his close friend and guide Chris Taylor, with the pair facing the demands of travelling between continents while repeatedly swimming, cycling and running the full triathlon distance.
The film is produced by Whisper, the company behind Sven and Ben Stokes: Phoenix from the Ashes, and directed by Chris Grubb. It marks another step into endurance challenges for Matthews, while also returning to some of the more personal territory explored in Finding Michael.
With the seventh and final event taking place in Antarctica, the documentary’s central question is a fairly simple one: how far can Matthews keep pushing himself before an already formidable sporting challenge becomes too much?
