Cynthia Erivo puts the justice system on trial in Prima Facie

Cynthia Erivo is heading into the courtroom for Prima Facie, the new big-screen adaptation of Suzie Miller’s acclaimed play, arriving in UK and Irish cinemas this November.

The Wicked star plays a young, ambitious barrister who has built her career on being formidable in court. She is particularly skilled at defending men accused of sexual assault and has an unwavering belief in the legal system in which she works. But when a life-altering event places her on the other side of that system, the principles that have shaped both her career and identity are thrown into question.

Erivo leads a cast that also includes The Gentlemen’s Daniel Ings, Ted Lasso star Toheeb Jimoh and Presumed Innocent’s Noma Dumezweni. The newly released trailer offers the first extended look at the adaptation and Erivo’s performance at its centre.

The film is directed by Susanna White, whose credits include Bleak House and Parade’s End, with Miller adapting her own play for the screen. The original Prima Facie became an international stage success after premiering in Sydney in 2019, with Jodie Comer later starring in the West End and Broadway productions.

For the cinema version, Erivo takes on a role built around a striking reversal: a lawyer accustomed to questioning other people’s accounts must confront her own faith in the rules and assumptions of the courtroom.
