Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2
After following David Martinez’s rise from underdog to Night City legend, the second instalment of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners takes viewers back to the dystopian metropolis to weave another enthralling tale of survival within a bleak futuristic world. This time, the plot centres around multiple characters. The first is Kingsley (Clancy Brown), a former mercenary who has his cybernetic enhancements downgraded after narrowly surviving cyberpsychosis. He receives a call from an old flame and agrees to help protect her cybernetic-obsessed daughter (Kimoy Lee). Then there’s Roman, a young cinephile armed with an analogue camera tasked with filming a dangerous street gang. When the job goes wrong, he’s saved by a mysterious stranger known as D (Nazeeh Tarsha) and becomes swept up in his plans for revenge.
Initially, this more ambitious narrative can feel fragmented as the perspectives shift between each of the characters. Once the main plot gets underway after a major discovery in the third episode, each of the protagonists becomes entangled in a gripping mystery that connects to both the first season and the video game in interesting and surprising ways (although viewers won’t need prior knowledge to understand what’s happening). As with the previous season, returning writers Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka keep the script focused on the humanity behind each character. Every episode adds a fascinating new layer to their motivations and relationships to flesh out the series’ themes of technology and family while constantly raising the emotional stakes.
Edgerunners 2 is still one of the most visually striking animations in recent years. Director Kai Ikarashi and lead character designer Kanno Ichigo bring the fully realised setting of Night City back to the screen with an astonishing level of detail and style. Iconic locations like The Afterlife are pulled straight from the game, the action is fast-paced and presented with real flair, and the violence is as brutal as returning viewers would expect. Ikarashi also makes effective use of monochrome to deliver this series’ most creative sequences.
Although Edgerunners 2 doesn’t quite reach the heights of David and Lucy’s lunar date, it succeeds in weaving a captivating and character-driven sci-fi drama. It’s a worthy follow-up that gives audiences an excellent reason to return to the city.
