World Championship – Day 9 – rocket Ronnie O’Sullivan flying towards last eight

Ronnie O’Sullivan took a considerable lead of 11-5 over Mark Williams after two sessions, the three-time world champion needing only two more frames to secure his spot in the quarter-finals.

O’Sullivan closed the first session with a 5-3 scoreline that reflected his solid contributions of breaks like 57, 53, 95, 56, 48, 86 and 48; his Welsh opponent trying hard to catch up with him, but failing to win more than three frames.

Williams’s tragedy got even more intense as the second session kicked off and O’Sullivan stormed in to take no less than six consecutive frames with runs of 107, 74, 51, 68, 128 and 93, making the scoreline go 11-3.

The match could have easily been shortened, and not had a third session, if Williams hadn’t won at least one of the remaining two frames of the session, a mission that he fully carried out with a top break of 86.

The match resumes today, O’Sullivan needing only two more frames to get his ticket for the quarters and meet with another former world champion, Neil Robertson.

Also with a good chance to reach the next round is Judd Trump, the player from Bristol finishing the first session 5-3 behind his opponent Ali Carter, but managing to turn the scoreline in his favour by the end of the second one, at 9-7.

In the other two matches, Welshman Jamie Jones took a comfortable lead of 10-6 over Andrew Higginson, while Matthew Stevens and Barry Hawkins are all square at eight apiece.
