Finding the fabulous in fashion again: Weird nudity takes over the VMA’s again

Finding the fabulous in fashion again: Weird nudity takes over the VMA’s again

Everyone is sick to death of hearing about the question that seems to be more important than the people unloading bullets at each other in Syria: Who was more naked at the VMA’s, Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus? The answer is that nobody should give a monkey’s uncle. Everyone accepts that nowadays, the modern celebrity has to have more than just talent; they have to become a spectacle and they have to shock. However, we can’t help but think female celebrities have gone slightly off-track by way of eccentric underwear. Why has weird nudity replaced charisma?

The key difference between Miley and Gaga is that the latter was sending some sort of message about how she’ll go to extreme lengths for the love of her fans and had a bit of a Botticelli theme, whereas Miley just wanted to get a little wild. Using their minimal attire, they are expressing something, which can only be condoned. However, surely being oddly naked is a slightly overdone method of expression for women? There are so many astounding designers out there, instead of reinventing the bikini in various shapes and materials we should be pushing for works of art in our fashion spectacles.

So let’s look at some of the triumphs in weird fashion from our best loved female celebs. There are so many wonderful pieces out there, all of which display innovative design and carefully placed detail. Firstly, Bjork’s infamous White Swan Dress by Marjan Pejoski. Expressing the fact that she is really quite odd, that she simply loves swans due to their monogamous nature, and can absolutely pull off pretending to lay and egg on the red carpet.

A true favourite of ours, Katy Perry’s Carousel Dress which was designed by Manish Arora. A colourful and intricate piece, it certainly helped Katy ooze her playful attitude towards life. She looked absolutely stunning in it, and the dress can be considered a work of art in it’s own right.

Paloma Faith on Later with Jools Holland wore a knitted piece by Inbar Spector and she certainly looked regal in the enormous dress. Faith is well known for her eccentric fashion and despite the huge array of hits and misses; she stays true to her own crazy style without showing 90% of her skin.

See, these outfits worn by Gaga are not only bizarre, but also absolutely beautiful. The Bubble Dress was created by Gaga’s own brand, Haus of Gaga, and clearly comes straight from the heart. It’s fun, flattering and leaves something to the imagination. The Commes des Garcons suit, killer platforms and big hair combination was bold to say the least, but there is no denying that she looks like she rules the world.

Women should wear whatever they want in order to express themselves, and the freedom to do so is becoming more and more apparent. But Weird Nudity is just not new anymore, and it’s giving young fans the wrong idea of how to view their bodies. All celebrities should definitely embrace the beauty and potential uniqueness of fashion as well as understand the responsibility they have to their young fans.
