The Pretty Reckless – Going to Hell

The Pretty Reckless – Going to Hell | Album review

The day that Taylor Momsen decided to pursue a career in music was the day that modern rock was revitalised. Never has a woman had a voice so faultless for the genre, and her band’s new album Going to Hell is little short of a masterpiece. There may have been four painful years between albums, but unsurprisingly it was well and truly worth the excruciating wait.

If you’re looking for the characteristically controversial lyrics that the band adore, then you’ll be in no way disappointed by Going to Hell. Follow Me Down is the album’s first track and certainly starts it off as it means to go on: with attitude, revolution and a distinctive blend of rock that no other band could ever pull off. Moreover, Why’d You Bring a Shotgun to the Party, Heaven Knows and Absolution are the type of tracks that will have you hitting the replay button more times than you thought was ever physically possible.

In contrast with the dirty rock ‘n’ rock sounds, though, the album also features slower, more emotional tunes that will show you another side of the band’s skills. House on a Hill, Blame Me and Waiting for a Friend are all examples of this convention. Momsen is no stranger to pouring her heart and soul out into her words, and Blame Me is a track that demonstrates that point flawlessly in a blend of raw, expressive magnificence.

The only feasible negative statement that could be made about the album would be that 12, awe-inspiring songs are not sufficient enough to satisfy the craving that the band create. However, that could be a declaration spawned of greed and addiction, as opposed to any genuine disapproval. Bravo to The Pretty Reckless, you’ve outdone yourselves, and left us ravenous for more!
