“The franchise lives on because people love music and they love to dance”: Christina Milian and Holly Sorensen on Step Up season three

“The franchise lives on because people love music and they love to dance”: Christina Milian and Holly Sorensen on Step Up season three

The Step Up saga began back in 2006 with the wildly successful dance movie starring 00s-and-beyond pin-up Channing Tatum. Six movies and two seasons (2018 and 2019) of a YouTube Red TV show later, Lionsgate+ have picked up the franchise for a third season.

Show creator Holly Sorensen remains at the helm for this next instalment where audiences are taken back to the High Water, Atlanta’s notoriously cutthroat performing arts college, to follow the daily lives of a crew of dancers trying to make it in the professional street dance world. Viewers can expect more on- and off-stage coming-of-age melodrama from compelling underdog characters battling the odds, with romance, rivalries, killer soundtracks and spectacular high-octane dance routines all featuring in abundance. After the tragic loss of actress Naya Rivera, popstar-turned-actress Christina Milian (grown-ups of a certain generation will no doubt remember her brilliant brand of pop from 2001 hits such as AM to PM) takes on the role of Collette Jones alongside Ne-Yo, as Sage Odom, and a fantastic ensemble cast.

The Upcoming had the chance to sit down with Sorensen and Milian to hear all about the revival of the show. They spoke about the joy of the series being able to return to screens after being rescued by Lionsgate+ after its shock cancellation, the impact of the loss of Rivera and continuing her legacy through her character’s story. We also discussed taking the franchise to bigger and bolder places to bring the enduring allure of the dance drama genre into 2022.

Step Up season three is released on Lionsgate+ on 16th October 2022.
