Connections Festival 2023: Empowering youth through theatre

Connections Festival 2023: Empowering youth through theatre | Theatre review

Since 1995, the National Theatre’s Connection Festival has been a platform for young people aged 13 to 25, providing them with opportunities to explore their talent and shed light on pressing societal issues. The annual event celebrates the creativity, courage and imagination of young individuals from across the UK. This year, ten remarkable shows were carefully selected and showcased at the prestigious Dorfman Theatre on the Southbank in London.

One standout play, Innocent Creatures, by Leo Butler, delves into the essence of humanity and the impact of technology on society. The lives of Mia and Enid become intertwined by chance, the narrative exploring themes of authenticity and what it truly means to be human. While the plot may be complex, the piece prompts thought and engagement. Mia’s character, in particular, undergoes significant development through her interactions with the rest of the cast.

Samphire, by Shamser Sinha, takes a bold look at neurodiversity in contemporary society. The story follows Alicia and Jake as they navigate the challenges of living their neurodivergent experience, facing a lack of understanding from figures of authority. The play authentically portrays the teenage experience and the struggles faced by many.

The Connections Festival brought together over 250 groups, comprising more than 6,000 young individuals, who participated in all aspects of theatre production, from backstage roles to front-and-centre acting. The inclusive event provides valuable real-life experience for young talents pursuing future endeavours in the performing arts.

What truly touches the hearts of attendees is the presence of classmates, friends and family in the audience, united in support of these young performers. Not only this, but the actors from each of the shows support each other through watching each other’s work. This community forms a strong bond, aspiring to shape the future of theatre and cultivate diverse representation on stage.

As the curtains close on Connections Festival 2023, the impact of the performances and the memories created will endure. This festival showcases the enduring power of youth, the importance of artistic expression, and the influence that theatre holds for individuals and society at large. The National Theatre continues to nurture the next generation of talent, lighting the way for the future of British theatre.
