Diane von Fürstenberg – Woman in Charge: On the red carpet at the London premiere

Fashion designer and philanthropist Diane von Fürstenberg, known worldwide for her creation of the “wrap dress”, gives audiences an insight into her colourful and fruitful life with her documentary Woman In Charge. The daughter of a Holocaust survivor, who spent time in Auschwitz concentration camp, von Fürstenberg’s mother paved the way for her to follow her dreams and hone her determination within the fashion industry to become a world-renowned designer.

Bringing her story to screen is a predominantly female crew of directors and producers who sifted through the bountiful loot of archive footage, photographs and design drawings that give an intimate portrayal of her life. Aside from this footage, there are also insightful interviews with her closest friends and her own children, too.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of attending the London premiere at BAFTA and speaking to von Fürstenberg about this ode to her own mother, what the film is all about and the collaboration process.

Sharmeen Obeid Chinoy, who co-directed the feature, discussed how she came on board with this project, what von Fürstenberg’s story means to her and how it resonates as an “anthem of freedom” for women worldwide.

Co-director Trish Dalton discusses the collaborative effort to create this film, what she herself finds endearing about the brilliant designer and what it was like getting closer to her and seeing von Fürstenberg’s treasured collections and journals.

Producer Tracey Aftergood talked about bringing the excitement surrounding the London premiere, her part in creating the film and how amazing it was to be able to go through some of the archival footage.
