Beyond beaches: Unique must-try experiences in Malta
The Republic of Malta has so much to offer to visitors and locals alike, however, most people tend to focus on its stunning sandy and rocky beaches. But there is more to this Mediterranean archipelago than just crystal clear waters. If you’re ready to expand your to-do list in this country, make sure that you don’t miss out on the below.
Indoor options
What you might not be aware of as a visitor, is that Malta has a dynamic entertainment scene with a variety of activities to explore. The country is also a significant hub for the digital gaming industry, recognised globally for its innovative technology. Since the island is steeped in history, you can’t miss out on the chance to visit one of its iconic museums. If you’re looking for a holier experience, then Malta is most definitely the country for you. There are currently a total of 359 churches on the entire archipelago, most of which showcase incredibly complex and beautiful architecture and artistry. Since there are so many churches, it’s doubtful that you’ll get the chance to see them all. So, try to carve the time to at least check out the historical Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, the Rotunda of Mosta, and Ta’ Pinu Basilica, located on the sister island of Gozo.
Unmatched outdoor adventures
Malta is one of the smallest countries in Europe, however, it does pack quite the punch when it comes to outdoorsy things to do. For starters, it’s a pretty hilly place, making it ideal for hiking fanatics. There are several hikes you can partake in, the best of which can be found online on the Lonely Planet website. But an honourable mention includes the hike from Dingli Cliffs to Wied iz-Zurrieq.
If you don’t like the idea of staying on your feet for long, especially under the scorching Mediterranean sun, we’d recommend renting a quad bike. These can be found practically in every corner of the island, and make for the perfect vehicle for exploration. We’d also recommend booking one of the available tours, some of which even include lunch and/or dinner in the cost.
Thrill seekers will also have plenty to do here. One great option is zip lining, which can typically be enjoyed from Migra I-Ferha, depending on the time of year. Parasailing is another option you can try out, this is more widely available but typically limited to the summer season. The best spots to try this out are in Mellieha, St. Julian’s, and Ghajnsielem.
As they say, good things come in small packages, and this could not be more true than in the case of Malta. Filled with beauty, history, and fun, there are plenty of things you can do to make your stay even better.
