Platonic season two

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne reunite as dysfunctional best friends Will and Sylvia for the second season of Platonic. Following Will’s engagement to Jenna (Rachel Rosenbloom) at the end of the last season, stress and doubts begin to creep in as the wedding day approaches. Despite the friends’ best attempts to help each other through their situations, disaster is never far behind. Co-creators Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco have refined the show’s formula for this newest instalment, offering a coming-of-age-style story that’s as thoughtful as it is outrageously fun.

Rogen and Byrne are once again fantastic together. They showed audiences how incredible their comedic rapport was in Bad Neighbours, and their chemistry continues to be as potent as ever as they bounce quippy one-liners off each other. Stoller and Delbanco’s script likewise gives the pair a lot of great material to work with, ranging from insane antics like a freak golfing accident to an engagement party that goes off the rails. The snappy pace keeps the jokes coming fast, with almost all of them landing. Supporting characters also get their moments to shine, with Luke Macfarlane as Sylvia’s supportive husband Charlie having one of the most interesting subplots of the series.

As funny as this season is, what makes Platonic work so well is that it truly cares about its characters. Underneath the stoner humour and pop-culture references, this is a show about friendship and people doing their best to find a way to navigate their messy lives. The series touches on various aspects of intimacy, relationships and professional struggles, which are handled with honesty and tact. Rogen and Byrne’s heartfelt performances lend extra weight to the more dramatic moments to underscore the humanity behind the chaos. There are so many subplots happening simultaneously at points, however, that the show can be a little scattered at times, and consequently skims over some significant plot beats that could have benefited from further exploration.

Season two of Platonic is a return to form for stars Rogen and Byrne as well as co-creators Stoller and Delbanco. It’s an endlessly entertaining comedy that keeps its focus on the characters caught up in the craziness.
