Nobody Wants This season two

Nobody Wants This season two | Movie review

Adam Brody and Kirsten Bell return as lovestruck couple Noah and Joanne for season two of Netflix comedy series Nobody Wants This. After the first season’s finale acted as a happily ever after to the couple’s burgeoning romance (with Noah choosing his relationship over his dream job as head rabbi), the newest series sees the pair navigate their relationship now that the honeymoon phase has started to wind down. Alongside Joanne’s uncertainty over converting to Judaism causing doubts about whether their relationship can survive, they also consider what starting a family could look like for them while contending with Noah’s domineering mother (Tovah Feldshuh), who strongly disapproves of Joanne.

While its bright colour palette and soundtrack, oversaturated with pop tracks, package this show as an easily digestible romcom, the script’s thoughtful exploration of relationships makes for some genuinely affecting moments.

Brody and Bell ooze with chemistry throughout. Not only are they able to bounce off each other with excellent comedic timing to generate plenty of chuckles, but they’re just as fantastic together during more tender moments. There’s a sincere and endearing quality to each of their performances that makes their relationship effortless to root for. The show continues its dissection of relationships through the supporting characters. Joanne’s sister and podcast co-host Morgan (Justine Lupe), for instance, strikes up an unexpected romance with her therapist (Lupe’s Succession co-star Arian Moayed) while Sasha (Timothy Simons) and Esther (Jackie Tohn) contemplate expanding their own family. While these subplots aren’t as interesting as the central couple’s plight, strong performances from the supporting cast and sharp writing nevertheless make them entertaining additions.

It’s somewhat frustrating, then, that the show’s reliance on genre tropes undermines much of what this show gets right. In addition to a lot of jokes not landing, a large chunk of the romantic scenes also leans towards the hokey side. Despite electrifying turns from Brody and Bell leading a script that has a surprising amount of heart, the second season of Nobody Wants This can’t help but fall into all the genre’s pitfalls.
