New documentary Beyond Trainspotting explores Irvine Welsh’s legacy ahead of 30ᵗʰ anniversary release

A brand-new feature documentary celebrating the life and legacy of Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh is set for digital release on 16ᵗʰ February 2026, marking three decades since Danny Boyle’s iconic film first hit screens.

Titled Beyond Trainspotting: The World of Irvine Welsh, the documentary is directed by Ray Burdis and Ian Jeffries and features exclusive interviews with Welsh himself, alongside friends and collaborators including Iggy Pop, Gail Porter, Lisa Moorish and Rowetta. The film delves into the personal and professional story of the writer who helped redefine British cultural identity in the 1990s – bringing to life a gritty, darkly comic vision of Edinburgh’s underbelly that resonated across the world.

Welsh reflects on his journey from troubled youth to international literary sensation, shedding light on the personal experiences that shaped his voice and the socio-political backdrop that fuelled his most provocative work. From the explosive success of Trainspotting – in print, on stage and on screen – to his continued impact on film, television and literature, Beyond Trainspotting traces the enduring relevance of his work and its fearless exploration of addiction, class, and Scottish identity.

With Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting turning 30 this year, the documentary offers a timely tribute to the man who helped shape a generation’s outlook and language.
