Fedz: Red carpet premiere at the Genesis cinema

Fedz: Red carpet premiere at the Genesis cinema

Starring, written and directed by the poker-faced “I don’t smile” Q, and featuring a bevy of young British talent, Fedz is a low-budget independent gangster film.

Fedz tells the story of renegade Scotland Yard agent Mike Jones, who turns his back on a corrupt police force – including a stream of turncoat former partners – going vigilante in the name of protecting London against a slew of gangsters, crooked cops and even a terrorist plot to release a deadly virus.

Despite the film’s tone, the Genesis cinema is electric with infectious excitement from the young cast, many of whom are experiencing a premiere atmosphere for the first time.

And yet, this isn’t your typical premiere: it’s bonfire night, the cinema is in east London and the red carpet is indoors and two metres long. In fact, this is more of a party than a premiere, with plenty of drinks, a live band and a free microphone ready for any of the numerous rappers present to take to the stage.

Because of this, the soundtrack contributors in particular buzz around with glee on the red carpet, taking photos and promoting left, right and centre. This seems only right as Fedz is a music-driven film – it even claims to be the first Shazam and Soundhound compatible film – and the Mixtape Award-nominated soundtrack features rappers Squingy, Ex, Lefty and K Koke amongst many others.

That the named talent of Ashley Walters (Top Boy), Dexter Fletcher (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and Wil Johnson (Waking the Dead) weren’t present is a shame, but they really only play bit parts in the film and their presence would have stolen some of the thunder from those who deserve it most. This is a night for the as-yet unknown actors of Fedz to take centre stage.
