Russian train station bombed leaving 15 dead
A bomb at the southern Russian city train station, Volgograd, has killed 15 people, leaving another 50 injured.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, however, the attack is believed to have been caused by a female suicide bomber.
“Initial indications are that the blast was set off by a female suicide bomber,” the National Anti-Terrorism Committee revealed in a statement.
Vladimir Markin, the spokesman for the Investigative Committee, said the bombs were set off near a metal detector.
“When the suicide bomber saw a policeman near a metal detector, she became nervous and set off her explosive device,” Markin said in a statement.
It is the second bombing in the city in two months.
In October, six people were killed and more than 30 injured when a bus was blown up, which Russian media reported was the work of a female Islamist suicide bomber.
“We heard a loud bang from behind, saw a bright flash and fell on the floor,” a witness told the ITAR-TASS news agency.
Concerns are arising over the security of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, due to take place in February 2014.
However, Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered officials to take “all necessary security measures”, according to a Kremlin spokesman and organisers have said the Olympics will be “the safest Olympics in history”.
