Josh Pyke – The Beginning and the End of Everything

In a parallel universe where talent is handed out like candy, Josh Pyke is an individual who is always at the front of the queue, palms sweating with anticipation, and acquiring more than his fair share of musical flair. But even with such enormous amounts of talent, the Australian-born artist is still an underrated marvel in our humble, British land.

The Beginning and the End of Everything is Pyke’s 2013 album, and is earnestly a breath of fresh air in the face of the indie genre. Lyrically, the tracks are a superior blend of poetry crafted with passion and emotive brilliance. Musically, the songs are so diverse in sound and tone that you’ll never get bored of listening to them; how many albums can you honestly say that about?

Pyke truly is the master of uniting genres and this collection of songs is the perfect expression of this convention. The album’s title-track, The Beginning and the End of Everything, is an addictive little tune with a quirky 60s sound. In comparison, Bug-Eyed Beauty is a soulful track with a somewhat country-esque vibe gyrating throughout it. Not many artists could get away without dedicating themselves to one particular genre but fortunately for us Pyke laughs in the face of this unwritten rule.

Other notable tracks include his new single Leeward Side, Feet of Clay and Warm in Winter. In all fairness there isn’t a weak track featured on the album and even if you’re not a fan of Pyke, you’ll still find a song amongst the compilation to cherish and treasure for years to come.

So, what’s the final verdict? Well, if you’re hankering after an album that illustrates genuine talent in a whirlwind manner, then The Beginning and the End of Everything is one for you. Likewise, if you’re bored stiff of generic, dull lyrics then give this spectacular album a listen; it will not only inspire you, but lull you into a perfect sense of wonder as well.
