Romulo Café: New Filipino restaurant opens in Kensington

As a result of its established success in Manila, Romulo Café is now set to open offering “a taste of the Philippines in the heart of Kensington”. Food fanatics would do well to celebrate the long-awaited arrival of a hub for Filipino cuisine in London, savouring its fresh and complex flavours and its comforting hospitality.

To most, Filipino cuisine is surprising unfamiliar as it lacks a mainstream following, despite the large community of Filipinos in London. Unbeknownst to many, it embodies a melange of global flavours. Filipino food originates from its obvious Southeast Asian roots, taking on the unique flavours of Malay, Chinese and Spanish cuisine. Romulo Café adds a touch of American flair and European sophistication, as the food is a generous blend of savoury richness and fresh flavours that challenge and delight the palate. The standout courses include a take on ceviche (tuna kilawin), which is extremely light and tangy and compliments the more intense flavours of the chicken barbecue.

The restaurant is a transformed Georgian townhouse, inspired by the atmosphere of a comfortable Filipino home, more specifically the home of its namesake, Carlos P Romulo. General Romulo, one of the most influential Filipinos in history, serves as the spirit behind the restaurant’s design, modelled after what his residence would look like had he lived in Kensington. The outcome is an inviting space that manoeuvres seamlessly from a hearty meal in the Diplomat’s Dining Room, to drinks at the General’s Bar, and good company and conversation in the CPR Library.
