Graham Nash – This Path Tonight

Veteran singer-songwriter Graham Nash has certainly showed no signs of slowing down, having released a new album titled This Path Tonight. The folk-rocker’s first album in 14 years – and only his sixth solo recording – provides an atmospheric and relaxing experience, a stark contrast from his previous work.  

The ten-track record begins with title song This Path Tonight, an upbeat tune with lyrics that will have listeners singing along in no time. Following this catchy opening the album veers into a mix of sober and contemplative songs that delve into topics such as growing old, love and redemption.

In the lead-up to release, the Blackpool-born singer’s life has taken a series of serious twists and turns. Nash recently announced the termination of his 38-year marriage and also that he will never collaborate with David Crosby again, effectively ending the 47-year career of Crosby, Stills & Nash. The loneliness and uncertainty that the singer must now be experiencing is reflected in many tracks on This Path Tonight.  

In Myself at Last, Nash starts off by asking “is my future just my past?” but discovers a more optimistic outlook by the end of the song. Elsewhere, he reminisces about his past successes with the Hollies (Golden Days) and the apprehension of finding and losing love (Another Broken Heart).  

The album ends with the melancholic Encore, a genuine and heartfelt track that questions how a musician will cope when their career reaches its end. A simple yet apt conclusion to an offering  filled with emotions, Encore shows off the 74-year-old’s soothing voice and moving songwriting. This Path Tonight is a beautiful depiction of an established singer who is still embarking upon new journeys and who shares our terror and excitement for what the future holds.
