Radio Free Alice – What’s in Between

Australian new wave/post-punk band Radio Free Alice drop their debut album What’s in Between this Friday. Taking inspiration from acts like The Smiths, this is a record that captures an unmistakable nostalgia for a pre-noughties era of Brit rock, despite not a single member hailing from our Isles. The exciting new project arrives ahead of the group’s UK and European tour this November.
What’s in Between establishes itself as a free-spirited record right from the outset, with opener Crying with You hitting listeners with soaring vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The sampling of real-world sounds, from a creaking gate to water droplets, creates the illusion of entering the surreal domain of Radio Free Alice, before they are abruptly brought back down to Earth when the beat kicks in. Frontman Noah spent his first ten years in the UK before relocating to Australia, a connection that comes through in his accent as he shouts down the mic, “I’ve been fashionable for exactly five minutes,” in the bridge.
Radio Free Alice continue to draw on their rock influences throughout, with tracks like Lunch Money particularly evocative of the 80s and 90s. Rule 31 is a highlight, pairing a driving beat with infectious riffs while giving the frontman room to showcase his impressive vocal range.
What’s in Between jumps between moments that invite listeners to dramatically stare out of a window and those that compel them to stomp their feet and dance on the table. The Intersection pairs catchy riffs with clever lyricism, making it an instant singalong, whilst the title track takes a more introspective approach, offering a deeper, more reflective sound without losing its danceable edge. Despite these shifts in mood, the album flows with minimal effort from track to track. At times, certain numbers border on sounding too stylistically similar, but are redeemed by the band’s ability to incorporate deliberate songwriting that keeps fans interested.
Undoubtedly a fantastically written record, this is a project that will resonate with old and new fans alike. And Radio Free Alice show no signs of slowing down, with the band set to headline iconic venues like London’s Electric Ballroom this November.
