Ok, Bye

Vault Festival 2018: Ok, Bye
Vault Festival 2018: Ok, Bye | Theatre review

As part of the Vault Festival 2018, Red Belly Black Theatre are presenting an emotive, thought-provoking play against the backdrop of the venue’s stunning underground space. OK, Bye is a beautifully written piece consisting of two strands: one tells the tale of three siblings trying to reconnect following the devastating loss of their mother, and the other shares the stories of a number of real-life contributors who each have their own perspectives on saying goodbye.

As well as the theme of bidding farewell, the concept of storytelling runs through every vein of this production and is expertly presented by writer and director Vicki Baron. The stories of the three central characters as well as those of the theatre company’s friends and loved ones are flawlessly intertwined to immerse the audience in a narrative that is heartbreaking, emotional, funny and full of impact.

The show’s three actors are equally as mesmerising as their subject matter. Kate Goodfellow, Sam Cornforth and Oscar Scott-White capture the attention of the audience as soon as they take to the stage. Their strong performances make theatregoers both laugh and cry throughout the hour-long piece.

OK, Bye also makes use of Andrew Armfield’s original music, lighting and movement to bring about a play with a difference that will stick in the mind for a long time after viewing it. With a simple set in an impressive venue, the cast and crew have drawn upon their extensive talents to create a memorable, must-see show.
