The new iPhones: Are they worth the money?
Since Apple released their latest iPhone models, the XS and XS Max, the reviews have been largely positive, with a general consensus that the new tech is a step forward from their predecessors, the X range. However, these premium updates come with a premium price, valued at £999 and £1099 respectively. So, are these models worth the money? Or are you better off waiting for the XR, which will be released in October at the more reasonable (relatively speaking) cost of £749. Well, here’s what to expect from the season’s most highly anticipated smartphones.
Processors
The new XS processors are unbelievably fast, enabling users to get the best from advanced apps and games, including those featuring augmented reality software. Gameplay is smooth and beautifully detailed, preventing lag and glitches even in the most complex sequences. And when it comes to online gaming, the only limits are your internet bandwidth.
Face ID
The X generation heralded the new age of Face ID, but Apple’s latest products have apparently perfected the tech to be just as fast as the finger-print sensors of their marker competitors. That is, as long as you aren’t wearing sunglasses. Any accessories which block IR light make the feature redundant – one small reason to be grateful for the end of summer.
Media playback
Apple has claimed that their latest displays have enhanced colour quality, and their screens are undoubtedly top of the range, with sharp and vivid next-gen HDR 4K Video. Indeed, the bigger screen on the XS Max is the perfect display for streaming on a morning commute. However, given Apple’s excellent track record in this area, whether the latest improvements are detectable to the human eye in most scenarios is perhaps questionable. Having said this, the audio balance is noticeably better and the volume louder, making it possible to listen without headphones.
Camera quality
The iPhone XS series uses two camera sensors for an impressive depth of field. By taking photos using both cameras at the same time in the portrait mode, it is possible to achieve a bokeh effect, whereby the subject is in focus and the background is blurred. While this is not new in itself, the effect is now adjustable, allowing you to rebuild the image in one swipe.
Design
The new iPhones are almost identical in appearance from the last generation, though they have introduced a new gold case which may appeal to the more fashion-conscious customer. In terms of invisible upgrades, the new phones are also waterproof to a depth of two metres for up to half an hour. If you are accident-prone, this is certainly something to consider.
Our verdict? If you want to play games with a lightning-fast processor or watch videos on the way to work – and money is no object – these new models could well be worth the investment. However, if you are not in desperate need of an update, it might be wiser to wait until next month and see if the XR can deliver more for less.
