Healthy, long-lasting relationships are seldom seen on TV, but when they are given some much-needed airtime, it can be like a breath of fresh air. This happens to be the case for Netflix’s latest docuseries, a delicate show that follows half a dozen different couples across various countries, focusing on their unique histories and showcasing their commitment and affection for one another. Although real depictions of romance prove to be not nearly as drama-filled as most media portray – and the series drags in certain parts – My Love: Six Stories of True Love stands as a heart-warming experience and an authentic raw view on the reality of long-term human companionship.

Expanding on the concept from Korean director Jin Moyoung’s 2013 My Love, Don’t Cross The River, which followed a couple into their 76th year of marriage, My Love: Six Stories of True Love details a specific couple’s daily life, history and gives space for the two to reminisce as well as examine how far they’ve come together. Each episode runs for just over an hour, is set in a different country and has a new director. From tales of preparing each other’s wills to recalling the time when leprosy led to marriage, every episode offers a new narrative and viewpoint, keeping viewers engaged for the most part. However, despite the soft and competent storytelling, there are some areas of inconsistency.

Unfortunately, some stories prove to be more interesting than others – and due to the show’s slow-burn feel – it can feel like a long watch. There are a couple of scenes that add nothing and make the series feel like a drag, such as the strange two-minute shot of the couple sleeping during the first episode. The production ends up losing steam due to its pacing issues. However, that being said, there are plenty of enduring tales that make the show worth a shot. All the couples are charming and likeable, the editing is consistent and overall it’s a lovely experience that focuses on realism.

Romance doesn’t have to be grandiose fairy tales to be captivating; in fact, the most authentic narratives can be the biggest heart movers. My Love: Six Stories of True Love is a commitment to finish but is all in all a sweet gem to add to your watch list.
